We are going to undertake a trip to our inner selves, in the company of the butterfly and St Ignatius of Loyola. For those uninitiated in the Spiritual Exercises, one of the greatest spiritual classics of all time, is the compendium of spiritual exercises to free oneself from all the chains that bind one to this world, and experience the sheer bliss, what is known in Sanskrit as ananda, and through the joy God himself, the sacchidananda.
However it is not easy to free oneself from all that one is tied to in this world; the world will not let one flee from her embrace all too easily. It requires a lot of will power to free from her enticing embrace. Therefore the first step in taking this journey is to recognise where one is, and what one seeks. Discernment and election are the two words that we would come back to again and again. To discern what God wants of me, is not all that easy. But fear not, for Inigo will show us how we can find what He wants of me.
But why the butterfly? What is her role in accompanying us in this journey. She will be a constant companion in this arduous, lonesome journey. She would play the role of the Chorus in the ancient Greek plays, interrupting our movements, and throwing more light on where we are and what we do, so that we are aware of what we do and are fully conscious of it.

The dance of the butterfly
Someone would think that is rubbish; butterflies do not sing, nor do they dance; all that they can do is fly joyously. But believe me I have sighted a butterfly that sings songs melodious. Who knows it is all just to make a difference in a world that cannot think of in a different way than it has been taught to.
Is it just a matter of imagination that a butterfly sings and dances? Can it ever be true? These are the questions that people will keep asking me, even as I try to capture the melody of the butterfly and cherish it in my heart.
Where is the butterfly and how does it look? Look into your heart, and you will be able to see it fluttering its wings, and joyously crossing from one place to another in your mindscape. Is it the spirit that animates all our being and arrests all our disorientedness?
Call her what you will, but you cannot close your eyes from the fact that she is there with you, and in you all the time, even when you negate her existence.
Just open your heart and let the butterfly speak words of comfort, sing songs of love and romance, dance joyously as we cross each new second, flowing into the limitless ocean of our existence in this passing world.
Maybe the butterfly will have something to offer us, as we stand at a little distance and watch her movements carefully, attentively, and lovingly.
